Expert Advice For Taking Care Of Your Dry Body Skin

Dry skin on your body can be rough. Itchy, flaky, or scaly, too. Everybody can experience these uninvited dry patches, which may affect anyone at any age. Our precious skin can run low on moisture for many reasons, such as cold or dry weather, sun damage, harsh soaps, and overbathing. Long-term dermal stress can contribute to dry skin, also known as xerosis or xeroderma.

However, fear not! You may do several things on your own to treat dry skin, such as exfoliating, moisturising and using year-round UV protection. As always, we recommend you find a dermatologist you trust and a skincare regimen that works for you. And please, ensure your experimenting with different products is in moderation (and doesn’t break your barrier or bank balance!)

 


What Causes Dry Skin?

Water loss from the skin's outer layer is the cause of dry skin. It might be brought on by:

  1. Heat. Fireplaces, space heaters, wood stoves, and central heating all lower humidity.
  2. Environment. Residing in cold, windy, or low-humidity environments.
  3. Bathing. Drying your skin out are long, hot showers or baths and over-scrubbing. The natural oils in your skin might also be removed by taking more than one bath daily.
  4. Soaps. Because they are designed to eliminate grease, many widely used soaps, detergents, and shampoos dehydrate your skin 
  5. Genetics: Eczema and psoriasis are two skin disorders that are more common in those who have dry skin.
  6. Ageing: As people age, the skin becomes thinner and generates fewer of the oils required for the skin to retain water.

Rest assured, dry skin is often not harmful. However, if neglected, dry skin can result in eczema. This excessive dryness can trigger the condition in people predisposed to it, resulting in a rash and cracked skin. Ouch. Plus, cracks in dry skin might let bacteria in and lead to bad vibes. These issues are most likely to happen when your skin's defences are seriously weakened. For instance, dehydrated skin might result in deep fissures or fractures that can open and bleed, creating a pathway for invasive microorganisms. Moisturise

To keep the health of your skin's protective barrier, a humectant moisturiser helps lock in water. Throughout the day, reapply, paying specific attention to your hands. Additionally, even on cloudy days, use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 before venturing outside. Put on plenty of sunscreen and reapply every two hours or more frequently if you're swimming or sweating.

Stay Hydrated

When you're thirsty = drink water. Consume non caffeinated beverages often and daily to help keep your skin well-hydrated.


Cleanse Post-Chlorine

Following a swim, rinse and moisturise. Even a flash spritz in the shower is beneficial post-swimming in a strongly chlorinated pool or salty ocean.


Bathe Safe

Limit your shower and bath duration to 10 minutes or less. Use warm water, not boiling. Gently pat dry after rinsing. Try to take a bath once a day at the most.

Stay Mild

Use a gentle cleanser or soap that is devoid of allergens. Use a shower gel or body wash without soap. Alternatively, try hypoallergenic soap - a moisturising soap without alcohol or ingredients that cause allergies - especially if you often wash your hands. Rinse well, then pat yourself dry. While your skin is still damp, apply a nourishing moisturiser.


Carefully Shave

News to no one who has ever shaved; it’s a damn dermis-drying activity. Use a lubricating product like our whipped shower foams before shaving if you do. If it doesn't itch, shave in the direction of hair growth. Use a razor-sharp blade and rinse it with warm water after each stroke. Apply moisturiser after.


Cover Up

Avoid exposing too much flesh when it's chilly or windy. Skin can become extremely dry under harsh conditions. When you're outside, wearing a scarf, hat, gloves, or mittens might help protect your skin. Cover your hands with appropriate gloves when gardening, using abrasive cleaners, or engaging in other activities that cause skin dryness.
