The Benefits of Double Cleansing in Your Skincare Routine

The Benefits of Double Cleansing in Your Skincare Routine

Unlike ‘glass skin’ or ‘skinimalism’, the act of ‘double cleansing’ is not quite as literal – it doesn’t actually mean you apply the same cleanser twice (although, this is a tried-and-tested method for some). So, what is double cleansing and why is it so famous? Let’s unpack the skinsation below.

What is double cleansing?

Double cleansing is a two-step process that involves applying two different cleanser formulas. The first is an oil-based or a balm cleanser, while the second is usually a water-based cream or foam cleanser (some skin types may opt for a gel cleanser, but more on this below.) The first cleanser works as an initial cleanse, while the second cleanser treats your skin and pores to a deeper cleanse and goes beyond removing the impurities from the top of your skin. Of course, some people use their favourite cleanser twice in a single setting – if this is your preference, then go for gold. You know your skin best.

The benefits of double cleansing

Many studies support the efficacy of double cleansing, suggesting that it can help prevent clogged pores and make your skincare products work even better. Still, you might be wondering why everyone is so smitten. Here are several other benefits to pique your interest:

  • Improved skin clarity
  • Enhanced pore cleanliness
  • More effective makeup and sunscreen removal
  • Double cleansing can be particularly helpful for oily skin types

How to double cleanse

It’s recommended to double cleanse once or twice a day, depending on your skin’s oil levels and how much makeup you wear. Whether you prefer to cleanse morning or night (or both), it’s completely up to you.

Step 1: Consider your skin type and if double cleansing is necessary (certain skin types may find it to be more worthwhile than others).

Step 2: Use the recommended amount of oil-based (or a balm) product to do an initial cleanse. Rinse or gently wipe away with a washcloth. Always follow the instructions on the label.

Step 3: Use a small amount of your cream or foam cleanser to re-cleanse the skin. Rinse and follow up with your oils, serums and moisturiser.

Step 4: If you’re cleansing in the morning, be sure to apply sunscreen as the final step of your skincare routine, and follow on with your makeup.

Double cleansing for different skin types

It’s go-time for your cleanser selection! The most important thing is to choose cleansers that are suitable for your skin type. Whether you have oily, dry, sensitive, normal, combination or acne-prone skin, here’s how you can optimise your double cleansing routine.

Dry and sensitive skin types

The dry and sensitive skin baddies will want to stick with gentle cleansers and steer clear from oil-stripping cleansers. Instead, make creamy, hydrating cleansers your besties (have you met Shea butter or Jojoba oil? We think you’d reallllly get along). Also, emollient-rich balms with natural oils will help retain moisture in the skin without causing a scene in the skin moisture barrier department.

Oily skin types

Start with an oil-based cleanser, or micellar water which will help to banish oil to where the sun don’t shine. Follow it up with a gel or clay cleanser that’s formulated for oily skin.

Bonus tip: Look for cleansers with oil-absorbing ingredients, like green tea and glycolic acid, which help to balance moisture levels and regulate sebum production.

Normal and combination skin types

You can cleanse normal and combination skin with any oil or rich cleaning balm first, and follow it up with a foaming cleanser. You want the skin to feel refreshed, but never too dry or tight.

Acne-prone skin types

If you have acne-prone skin, first cleanse the skin with a gentle and lightweight cleansing oil. You want to find a holy grail that’s packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory goodies, ‘cause breakouts never made anyone’s day better. Follow it up with a gentle exfoliating cleanser, or a gel-based cleanser with salicylic or glycolic acid, which can help to brighten the skin.

Friendly reminder that while double cleansing is doing award-winning work for certain skin types, it’s certainly not a necessity for others. You may try it for yourself and discover that it doesn’t really add anything to your existing skincare routine. So, if you’d prefer to save your coin and spend it on something more FUN *ahem – calling all body care lovers* we wholeheartedly support that decision.
